Encore Azalea’ Autumn Embers

“Encore Azalea? Autumn Embers? PP#10,581″

Plant Patent #10,581. Cultivar: ‘Conleb’If I had to pick one favorite from the reblooming Azaleas Encore? series, it would have to be Autumn Embers?, with its neat, spreading habit (just right for containers as well as the garden!), its semi-double blooms, and its unusual persimmon-red flower color! Just as vigorous and bloom-happy as its larger cousins, this compact little shrub is a joy in any setting from the front of the foundation to the edge of the driveway!Do you know about the Encore Azaleas?? I call them a gardener’s dream come true, and they really are! Not only do you get TWO full seasons of bloom every year (spring and fall), but you get scattered blossoms all summer long. AND they’re compact enough to grow in containers (especially Autumn Embers?!), so no matter where you live, you can enjoy them indoors year-round! They bloom even more freely as houseplants, sending up flowers 11 months out of every 12 in ideal conditions! Wow!Now, Autumn Embers? is particularly glorious because it’s the only Encore Azalea? with semi-double blooms. Each flower has extra petals, adding to the showiness of the display. And considering the size of the shrub, these blossoms are big — 2? to 3 inches across! They arise very abundantly in both spring and fall, just covering the 2?-foot-tall, 3-foot-wide shrub in bright orangey-red color!Autumn Embers? is just as easy to grow as any other Azalea, happiest in full sun to light shade (afternoon is best, but don’t worry about it) and slightly acidic soil. Most of us in the zone 7-9 hardiness range already have this type of soil, and if you’re growing this shrub in a container with a soilless potting mix, a bit of peat moss every so often will do the trick nicely. This shrub needs no pruning or shaping to look its best, and the evergreen foliage keeps it attractive year-round!In the garden, put Autumn Embers? among summer-blooming perennials like Platycodon. It also makes a big splash with spreading Petunias and other long-bloom

Balloon Flower Komachi

Big Blue Balloon Flowers Keep Their Puffy Bud Form! Like umbrellas seen from above, these fascinating blooms are puffed up, evenly creased, and absolutely gorgeous! The most exotic Balloon Flower yet, Komachi resembles a mass of blue umbrellas seen from above, something like Renoir’s famous painting Les Parapluies. They look for all the world like huge, unopened buds, with neatly-drawn seams around each petal and a puffed-up, light-as-air form. The compact plants reach 18 inches tall in the garden, sporting a mixture of small green balloons and larger blue at the same time. An eye-catching and beautiful display! As colorful as an annual, Platycodon is actually quite hardy and long-lived, increasing the length of its bloomtime for several years after becoming established in the garden. Excellent for garden or vase, they flourish in the sunny garden. Pkt is 25 seeds.

“Sedum Black Jack PP#16,736″

Black Leaves and Bold Pink Blossoms! The only one of its size I’ve ever seen! Plant Patent #16,736.Simply one of the most stunning accent plants I’ve ever seen for the sunny garden, Sedum ‘Black Jack’ is a gardener’s dream — deep purple (nearly black) foliage from spring through fall, brilliant clusters of pink blooms that bring in the butterflies, and a tall, wide upright habit that fills up space with hard-to-find color!A sport of the popular ‘Matrona’, ‘Black Jack’ differs from other dark-leafed Sedums in that it’s a full 2 1/2 feet tall and 3 feet wide — no need to restrict it to containers or small spaces! And the color is midnight-dark, even when the summer heat bleaches nearby plants. Imagine ‘Black Jack’ behind a stand of Samuel Oliphant, for instance, its black accents showing up the fresh green variegated foliage of Samuel Oliphant and its dazzling pink flowers combining with the tri-colored foliage of its famous cousin!’Black Jack’ begins blooming in late summer and continues through fall, the flowers displaying the famous Sedum willingness to dry right on the plant and keep their shape beyond the first frosts. Butterflies find them irresistible, songbirds will use them as landing pads, and the falling snow will find a beautiful resting-place on these sturdy, attractive flattopped 5-inch flowerheads.Like all Sedums, ‘Black Jack’ thrives in a wide range of soils, and doesn’t mind rough conditions from heat and humidity to cold and even drought. Once established in your garden, it’s willing to weather just about anything that comes its way, making it one of the most carefree perennials you will ever grow. The foliage is leathery and very thick, which enables it to resist burning or fading. And ‘Black Jack’ looks great with all your sun-lovers, from Perovskia to Garden Phlox! Space plants about 2 feet apart for bushy, solid coverage. Zones 3-8.
